Some of the best memories of our lives will be playing on a team, be it sport or business we come together and build a unit that can shift mountains when working as one. The sheer magic of a team working and pushing each other to extremes and heights is a true delight to witness. A team that is so united that all members are pretty much running from the same heartbeat, the same vibrational frequency and pushing for glory together. One has to ask how we get to that stage.

If you look at teamwork as a jigsaw with all the pieces as individual people scattered around, the job then is to start building, piece by piece person by person the jigsaw starts to come together. The outside which is a bit easier to build can be the leaders, and the inside the followers or tribe who at times you have to twist and turn a bit to make them fit. Some can even be very hard to fit but with encouragement, vision and guidance they also start to fit into place and the finished jigsaw is one of brilliance and true growth.

Just when you are finished people and players will move on and new pieces will have to be found which can lead to frustration, arguments and a lot of head scratching. With belief, sticking to the core values the right piece or person will manifest and slot in perfectly again. It’s all a game of highs and lows, ups and downs but what a journey it can be with a team.

It’s a process and journey that has to start with everyone sitting down and showing people that this is the goal and vision we see for our team. Everyone has to buy into the vision otherwise the wheels will eventually fall off the cart and gaining back the momentum can be hard.

It’s all about small gains in many areas in the business or sport and when these small gains are implemented over a period of time vast progress can make a great business a brilliant business, a great sporting team a brilliant sporting team. Everyone will be in the mind set of helping and encouraging others to bring the best out in them. A team that works together AS ONE, a team that all parties are singing from the same hymn sheet are a team in growth and the results are a winning mentality.

I personally am grateful to have played rugby with teams of men who became brothers on and off the field. A tight bond-like jigsaw was born where everything was interwoven and when we all hit the trenches often in the muck and rain we backed each other every time. I often looked to the left and right of me and knew each man would give his all for the pride of the jersey on his back. In business we can take a lot from sport in this regard.

We all want to a part of a team, a team of people who bring out the best in each other, a team forever. Start a team that will bring the change the world needs. Have a great day.
