We are all looking for the mind-set of a champion but are we willing to put the time into strengthening the mind like one. Just like going to the gym for the physical body we also have to go to the gym for the mind. A weak mind will always have excuses, blaming others for your problem, choosing what is easy over what is right, procrastination, looking for external validation, lacking resilience, over analysing, jealousy, refusing to forgive and bad attitude.
How many times does your mind say no need for the exercise today, it’s saying relax, have a cuppa and a few bickies instead, or when the alarm goes off your mind is saying I’m tired have another 20 minutes sleep you will get up on time tomorrow but when tomorrow comes the same thing happens.
Back a few years ago I had some of these self-limiting traits but if you want to be a great coach and coach people to the highest standard you have to put the work in on yourself. I made the choice to be the best I can be and the journey to become the master of my mind began. You can’t just read this from a book and try to pass it on, you have to go through the process yourself, and you have to go to war at times with your mind to win.
You have to start slowing the mind down by practicing mindfulness, breathing techniques, working with a mind coach, keeping a journal, getting out of you comfort zone, developing a good daily routine. When you start putting in the mind work you become clear, more focussed, more energised, you start becoming the person that will be your best self and the top few percent in the world over time.
We all have a choice to be good or to be great, it all starts with a strong mind. So when your mind is screaming to stay in bed jump out, when your back is to the wall and your mind is saying it’s too hard keep going, and when you down and your mind is saying I can’t get up again that’s the time to get up and keep fighting. These are all small gains but when added up will lead to a strong mind.
Earl Woods, dad to Tiger Woods trained him to be the best in the world mentally, he brought military style training into his daily routine so that nothing put Tiger off in the heat of the battle. It’s frustrating to see many sports and business people not reaching maximum potential beacause they overlook the mental side of things. You have to train your mind so that you eliminate any surprises that may tighten you up in the heat of the battle.
Your strongest muscle and worst enemy is your mind, you can move mountains with your mind or you can be brought to your knees with your mind, train it well.
