Sometimes there are no words. And perhaps… there were never meant to be.
There is an old story that Brother Matthew once shared.
Long ago, a monk lived quietly in a small monastery nestled deep within the forest.
People travelled from far and wide seeking his wisdom.
One winter’s morning, a young traveller arrived carrying a burden too heavy for words.
He sat beside the monk.
The monk never asked what was wrong.
He never offered advice.
He never searched for the right words.
He simply sat in silence.
The wind whispered through the ancient trees.
The birds continued their morning song.
The forest carried on, as if it understood that this moment belonged to silence.
Time passed.
Neither of them spoke.
Eventually, the young traveller stood.
He placed a gentle hand on the monk’s shoulder.
Their eyes met for just a moment.
Nothing was said.
Nothing needed to be.
Then the traveller quietly disappeared among the trees.
The monk smiled…
not because he had answered,
but because he knew none had been needed.
A traveller who had watched from a distance finally approached.
“Master… what did you say to him?”
The monk smiled gently.
“Nothing.”
The traveller looked puzzled.
“Then how did you help him?”
The monk looked towards the forest and softly replied,
“Sometimes the greatest conversation… is the one that never needed words.”
I’ve thought about that story many times.
Because life has taught me the very same lesson.
We live in a world that rushes to fill every silence.
We search for the perfect advice.
The perfect answer.
The perfect words.
But sometimes…
People don’t need us to solve their problems.
They don’t need another opinion.
They don’t even need us to understand everything they’re feeling.
Sometimes they need to know…
They don’t have to carry the weight alone.
A hand on a shoulder.
Someone willing to sit beside them.
Someone choosing not to walk away.
Because presence speaks a language…
That words never can.
Maybe that’s why the moments we remember most are often the quietest ones.
The friend who stayed.
The hug that needed no explanation.
The person who sat beside us when the world felt too heavy.
Perhaps the greatest act of kindness…
Isn’t speaking at all.
It’s reminding someone—
without saying a single word—
That they are not alone.
So today…
Before you search for the perfect words…
Remember this:
Sometimes there are no words.
And sometimes… that’s exactly what another heart needs.
